East Kentucky Power's Electric Co-op Systems Partner with WKYT's First Alert Defender
09/01/2009
In August, East Kentucky Power Cooperatives' electric co-op systems announced a new partnership with WKYT and its sister station WYMT out of Hazard, for the new “First Alert Defender” dual polarity radar.
This is the most important, lifesaving advancement in weather
technology and forecasting ever in Kentucky.
WKYT’s (Channel 27, Lexington) First Alert Defender dual polarity radar, that went on the air this month, will be more advanced and nearly three times more powerful than any other Doppler radar scanning Kentucky’s skies. First Alert Defender will cover most of the service territory of EKPC’s system.
By forming this partnership, EKPC is providing members the best weather, safety and energy efficiency information. Through the WKYT web site, which has up to 7 million page views per month, Kentucky’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives are providing vital information on ways people can improve the
energy efficiency of their homes and businesses, while providing up-to-date weather data to keep Kentuckians safe. All 16 member cooperative dispatch centers and East Kentucky Power’s Energy Control Center in Winchester will obtain around-the-clock, real-time weather through direct links to the dual Doppler system.
The WKYT web site features prominent links to www.simplesavings.coop, which links to every member cooperative web site. The site has energy information tips, streaming videos about energy efficiency projects and more.
Because of the partnership, WKYT.com now is providing thousands of Kentuckians access to vital information on the many simple and inexpensive ways that they can seal their duct work, stop air infiltration and improve the energy efficiency of their homes.
