Kentucky Electric Co-op Linemen Rodeo July 24 – 25
05/28/2008
Linemen raise flags at last year's rodeo.
Kentucky's electric cooperatives Linemens' Rodeo, now in its fourth year, will be held in a new location–Somerset, KY. This year's rodeo also promises to be bigger and will offer more activities for the whole family.
On July 24, The Center for Rural Development will be used to host a large indoor exhibit hall of various vendors and for rodeo registration. The rodeo will be held the next day on the 25th at South Kentucky RECC’s annual meeting site located west of Somerset.
The rodeo, which began in 2005, is a day-long happening where linemen from across Kentucky's electric cooperative systems compete in such events as Cross Arm Relocation, Hurtman Rescue, and Insulator Change-out. The rodeo started as part of a state effort to make lineworker safety a top priority for electric co-op utility employees in Kentucky. While the event is a competition, the rodeo tests line workers’ skills and safety practices—scoring rewards safety over speed.
Last year, almost 80 linemen from across the state competed in teams and as individuals.
