Energy Policy Act Comes to Kentucky
09/01/2005

Congressman Ron Lewis (pictured right and on the right) visited Hawesville in western Kentucky after the signing of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, to highlight how the new federal law could help Kentucky businesses use more alternative energy. At the Weyerhaeuser Hawesville Operations paper production plant on August 26, Lewis talked with Mike Maloney, vice president and mill manager.

One of the features of the Energy Policy Act allows electric co-ops to use Clean Renewable Energy Bonds for alternative energy projects. The Hawesville Weyerhaeuser plant, which generates 60 percent of its electricity at the plant site, is working with Kenergy electric co-op to see if those bonds could be used to replace some of its natural gas generation with biomass.

Also on the tour with Rep. Lewis were KAEC President Ron Sheets, Kenergy President and CEO Mark Bailey, David Spainhoward from Big Rivers Electric Corporation, and members of the local media. Weyerhaeuser's Mike Maloney is the Industrial Director on Kenergy’s Board of Directors. Jim Grant, human resources manager at the plant, is chairman of Kenergy’s Board.
