Stallons Appointed to Kentucky Climate Action Plan Council

Mark Stallons, president and CEO of KAEC member electric cooperative Owen Electric Cooperative, was appointed to the Kentucky Climate Action Plan Council earlier this year by Len Peters, secretary of the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC).

According to its Web site, the council was created by the EEC to "identify opportunities for Kentucky to respond to the challenge of global climate change while becoming more energy efficient, more energy independent, and spurring economic growth.

"The Council is charged with collectively developing an action plan to address the causes of climate change, prepare for the likely consequences and impacts of climate change to Kentucky, and establish firm benchmarks and timetables for implementing the KCAPC recommendations."

The council is composed of more than 30 individuals including state government cabinet secretaries, legislators, city and county officials, business leaders, and environmental advocates.

Stallons is one of two electric utility representatives on the council. The other is Vic Staferri, chairman of E.ON U.S. -- the parent company of Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities. David Armstrong, chairman of the Kentucky Public Service Commission also serves on the council.

The council will hold six public meetings over the course of 2010. The first meeting was held in January. The next meeting is set for March 22. A final report will be issued in December.

In addition to its members, the council will rely on the following five "technical working groups" to help produce the final report:
• Agriculture, Forestry & Waste Management
• Cross Cutting Issues
• Energy Supply
• Residential, Commercial & Industrial
• Transportation & Land Use
